Iowa City is full of big ideas, and Amy believes we need to turn them into action to build the shared future we want. She knows now is the time to act: to protect our most vulnerable neighbors, move forward long-standing community demands, make decisions based on facts not allegiances, and refocus on our stated strategic priorities.
Her understanding of Iowa City has been shaped through service and listening. Improving Iowa City requires real action, engagement, and leadership from our local elected officials, not just showing up at meetings and voting.
Amy’s priorities on the issues facing Iowa City:
Affordable Housing
Addressing the housing crisis requires urgency and it takes systems, commitment, and sustained effort.
We’re falling behind, and we can’t keep putting all our eggs in one basket at a time. Iowa City needs a coordinated approach that preserves existing units, supports new development, and removes barriers for partners ready to help contribute to the solution. This isn’t about chasing headlines, it’s about showing up, again and again, to get people housed.
Community Safety & Wellbeing
Everyone deserves to feel safe and that requires a new approach.
We can’t keep relying on the same tools for every crisis. A public safety system should be holistic, effective, and rooted in community trust, not just enforcement. That’s why we need to fully invest in dispatching trained mental health professionals through 911, so residents in crisis are met with care, not escalation. We need to borrow good ideas that have been successful elsewhere and invest in supports and systems built for people. It’s better for outcomes, better for budgets, and better for the people who call this city home.
Community Engagement & Partnerships
Strong partnerships and genuine community engagement are essential to getting things done.
Iowa City must trust and support community partners who work tirelessly every day to solve problems, support residents, and build solutions that reflect our shared goals. We should make it easier, not harder, for organizations, residents, and leaders to collaborate and contribute.
Equity & Inclusion
To build a just Iowa City, we must confront systemic inequities head-on and create solutions that work for all.
Our city’s strength comes from its diversity, and cannot be afraid to pull the levers available to us to protect those who call our city home. I’m dedicated to advancing policies that dismantle systemic inequities, center marginalized voices, and ensure every resident can access the services, opportunities, and protections they deserve.
Mobility & Transportation
Everyone deserves safe, affordable, and accessible ways to get around.
Amy supports expanding reliable, eco-friendly public transit, designing complete streets that work for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers alike, and prioritizing infrastructure that makes biking and walking real, everyday options.
Environmental Stewardship
& Community Health
Our community’s well-being depends on thoughtful leadership that balances growth with protecting the environment for future generations.
Amy supports policies that promote clean, sustainable practices and build resilience, while ensuring solutions are equitable and benefit all residents. Effective action requires partnering with experts, residents, and community leaders to understand challenges and opportunities and implement practical, lasting solutions.
Economic Development
& Small Business Support
To build a stronger Iowa City, we must create an environment where every business can grow and contribute to our community’s unique character.
Iowa City must cut red tape and build infrastructure that supports sustainable, equitable growth for all businesses. Prioritizing resources that improve access to capital and networks, while investing in arts and culture, will strengthen our local economy and preserve what makes our city unique.
